"Remembering the Past...Planning for the Future"...Planned Giving
- A Simple “Remainder” Bequest in your will is easiest of all. Make bequests to your children, grand-children, church or synagogue, etc. and simply leave the “remainder” of your estate (investments, cash, etc.) to the Milan Historical Museum. Please consult with your lawyer and/or financial advisor and notify the museum of your intended bequest.
- Endowment Fund Gifts: are one-time gifts of $1,000 or more and are designated to the museum’s Endowment Fund at the Sandusky/Erie County Community Foundation. These gifts are acknowledged with a plaque displayed in the foyer of the 1846 Galpin House and can be inscribed with the dedication of the donor’s choosing. The return on these investments, interest and dividends provides over 70% of the museum’s annual income. Endowment Gifts are a permanent legacy for future generations to enjoy Milan’s unique history.
- Employer Matching Gift Program: Matching funds from your employer can double your gift. Ask your employer if you are qualified to participate. Local companies that match gifts are: KeyBank, R.R. Donnelley & Sons, & Cedar Point!
- Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT): A great tax advantage. Direct a highly appreciated asset(s) to a CRT and name the museum as beneficiary. The Trust then sells the asset at full market value, pays no capital gains taxes, and re-invests the proceeds in income-producing assets which grow tax free. For the rest of your life, or that of your spouse or other designated beneficiaries, the Trust will pay out income! When all the beneficiaries are gone, the remaining asset(s) will go to the museum.

Volunteer
Interested in “hands-on” history? There are many opportunities to volunteer. Love history, have a weakness for textiles, manuscripts, photos, glass or fine art?
These committees could use your interest and expertise…. Volunteers are appointed by the board of trustees to standing committees. We’d love to have you join us.
- Building & Grounds: maintenance and repair, record keeping. Historic Houses are artifacts too!
- Collections Management: artifact accession, deaccesion, loans, care and maintenance of over 50,000 artifacts!
- Exhibits Sub-Committee: assist with the design and interpretation of seasonal and permanent exhibits.
- Education & Programs: Settlers Weekend is a blast! Helps us take our trunk show “on the road”, set up exhibits at local libraries ~ the possibilities are endless.
- Finance: Oversee the investments and long term fiscal stability of the museum.
Gift Shop: Everybody loves a sale! Help us create truly unique items reflective of our very own museum treasures!
- Publicity & Marketing: “marketeers” with techno-savvy are needed! Web site, direct mail, it’s all here!
- Membership: the MHM Society generates funds to support the museum. The Society is a wonderful way to support the museum.
- Historical Records & Ethics: oversees the ethical performance of the Board and helps carry out the wishes of donors and contributors.
- Personnel: Your assistance would be welcome.
