Kid Facts from the Museum

Vaseline Glass is a particular kind of yellow-green glass made by adding 2% Uranium Dioxide to the glass formula. This addition creates a yellow-green color in the final piece. Vaseline Glass is verified by using an ultraviolet light, or black light, on the item.  When this is done, the glass turns a bright florescent green – this procedure is the only verification of true Vaseline Glass.

Samuel Winchester's Balloon Ascent - on September 13, 1855 Samuel Winchester had a perilous first hydrogen balloon ride.  ...It was now 26 minutes past 4 o'clock; mercury indicates eight degrees below zero: still ascending at the rate of 1000 feet per minute.  I was now 20,416 feet from the earth... Sandusky Commercial Register September 30, 1855
On October 2, 1855 he attempted a second ascent from Norwalk, but was never heard from again.
