This Month in History... January

Valentine Fries was born in Germany on January 9, 1826. He moved to America when he was five years old, eventually ending in Milan in 1848. After owning a grocery store for several year, Fries began his own shipbuilding business. In 1868, when the dam supplying water to the canal broke, Fries moved his operation to a location just north of Mason Road, near Route 13 known as Fries Landing.
His most famous ship built at Fries Landing was the Golden Age. Believed to be the largest ship on Lake Erie, it was 287 feet long with a carrying capacity of 3,100 gross tons.
